A plane propeller ripped apart the side of a sedan on a stretch of highway in Minnesota while making an emergency landing last week.

When most people are driving, they look out for other cars, but what the driver of one 2014 Ford Fusion saw in her rearview mirror was a small plane flying low and approaching fast.

The woman's car was sideswiped by the propeller making the back part of the driver's side look more like a shark than a car.

"The plane was headed for Minot, N.D., but had only climbed about 1,000 feet into the air when the pilot was forced to land on Highway 10 just south of the airport," reported the Minnesota State Patrol on Facebook. "The motorist said she noticed the plane in her mirror but was unable to move out of the way before the propeller shredded part of her car."

After the plane and the car made contact, the driver of the car manoeuvred into a ditch before more damage was done.

No one was injured. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
