The railway division of Bombardier Inc. has been awarded a $577-million (U.S.) contract with the London Underground.

Bombardier Transportation will supply train communications technology as part of an upgrade involving four of the networks sub-surface lines.

The control technology is similar to that running successfully on the Metro de Madrid in Spain.

Bombardier will equip the 310 kilometres of track line, 113 stations and 191 train sets by 2018, followed by a two-year warranty period.

The main project office will be in London, with Bombardier sites in England, Bangkok, Helsinki, Madrid and Pittsburgh providing much of the product supply and engineering works.

Bombardier's communications system is operating around the world on 13 lines in North America, Europe and Asia.
