CanWest Global Communications Corp. says the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has extended the media company's creditor protection from bankruptcy until June 15.

The company said Monday that the latest extension comes days before a March 31 deadline, which was itself extended from last year.

CanWest filed for protection from bankruptcy last fall under the federal Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act after amassing $4-billion in debts and getting squeezed by the recession-induced slump in advertising revenue.

The company has put its newspaper division up for sale and has already received offers for all or some of its assets.

CanWest operates a string of big city dailies from Vancouver to Montreal, including the National Post, as well as the Global TV network, numerous specialty TV channels and Internet and other assets.

The newspaper division, which is under its own restructuring deadlines, has a deadline of April 14.
