Exchange-traded funds were supposed to make investors' lives easier. They are cheap, tax-efficient and intended to be ideal for passive investors.

And yet -- there are now thousands of ETFs out there. Pick a sector, a theme, a country, a strategy, and you'll find an ETF for it. There are actively managed ETFs and leveraged ETFs as well. In other words, if you were trying to avoid having to do a lot of research and picking, you're out of luck.

Heather Pelant, managing director of BlackRock Asset Management Canada, took your questions on the ETF market. BlackRock is the company behind the iShares series of ETFs.

Ms. Pelant is responsible for overseeing the exchange traded products business. She previously spent four years as a business development officer for iShares in San Francisco. Her financial service industry experience includes representing Morgan Stanley Asset Management and the Morgan Stanley Consulting Services Group in Honolulu, Seattle and San Francisco.

Ms. Pelant is a Certified Investment Management Analyst and an Accredited Investment Fiduciary. She received her B.A. in Asian Studies at the University of Victoria. Subsequently, she earned her M.A. in Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and graduated from the Stanford Inter-University Centre for Japanese language studies in Yokohama, Japan. She most recently completed her Global Executive MBA from the Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois and Schulich School of Business in Toronto.
