Jori Bolton/The Globe and Mail

The Globe and Mail's annual ranking of online brokers has been going strong for 14 years, which means it's the longest continuously running review of Canada's online brokerage business.

The ranking is designed to, first, help people new to do-it-yourself investing find the right broker and, second, to help investors benchmark their existing broker. Brokers are evaluated by personal finance columnist Rob Carrick on the basis of cost and services relevant to maintream investors, as opposed to active traders.

The ranking is popular with individual investors, but brokerage industry people also pay a lot of attention to it. In fact, some will time improvements to their service to coincide with the evaluation period before the ranking is issued.

The ranking is archived on Globeinvestor.com for easy reference. You can find it at tgam.ca/onlinebrokers.
