The Canadian dollar's ascent against the greenback this year has been well publicized. But how does it stack up against other major currencies?

Favourably, for many people with travel plans this winter. Of the world's 16 major currencies, so far this year the loonie has appreciated against 11 of them, including the Japanese yen, Mexican peso and the euro.

Of the 176 currencies that Bloomberg tracks, the Canadian dollar has risen against 156 this year.

The loonie has lost ground in some places though. Exchanging money in Australia or New Zealand will seem pricier, along with Brazil and South Africa.
