The presents have been opened, the holiday feast devoured, and the extended family is long gone. Now you can start cleaning up - and bracing for that flood of credit card bills. If you are one of the many Canadians who didn't have a family budget to help guide you through the holiday season, as well as the tumultuous last year, here is your chance to come up with a financial plan.

Flush from spending, bogged down with record debt and reeling from stock market turmoil, many Canadians will be entering 2010 with a stinging financial hangover. Which makes drawing up a family budget more critical than ever.

Chaya Cooperberg will join us on Tuesday, December 29th at 12 pm ET for a live online discussion on why you need a family budget and how to go about setting one up.

Ms. Cooperberg is the personal finance blogger behind Home Cents. She's the mother of two young girls, managing a busy household in the suburbs of Toronto on a tight budget. She's also built a full-time career in investor relations, running award-winning programs for Canadian public companies.

Ms. Cooperberg appeared in a Globe & Mail Building Blocks video on Monday with advice on how to teach kids the basics of financial literacy: how to save, spend and share their money. Last week's Building Blocks story looked at how a buget can help a family oversee their holiday spending, as well as help them achieve other short and long-term financial goals.
