You can order limited-edition original works starting at $20 at sites like 20x200 and ArtStar. The ubiquitous Etsy is full of affordable artwork.
Your local design school will also have studio sales throughout the year showcasing local talent. Sign up for the school's online mailing for upcoming fairs.
Do the same for your local galleries, some of which allow rentals so you can test-run a piece without commitment.
They may even provide free consultation to find the right piece for your place and then rent it for as little as $20 a month. If you love it the rental fee can usually be applied as a credit when you buy.
If you want to play around with personal artwork or photos then hang onto the frames from the big-box store and design and cut new mattes, roughly $10 at a local art store, to complement your prints.
There are many places to find affordable art that suits your style.
And while you're on the hunt, be sure to ask friends and colleagues if they have any emerging artists in their circles. The perk of supporting new talent is snagging a great deal.
