Chinook Roads Partnership, a joint venture of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. and Spain's Acciona SA, has been awarded a $769-million contract to build and operate the southeast section of Calgary's Stoney Trail Ring Road, SNC-Lavalin said Friday.

Under the 30-year public-private partnership, the joint venture will design, build, maintain, operate and partially finance the project.

It involves building 25 kilometres of six-lane road, including nine interchanges, one road flyover, two rail flyovers and 27 bridge structures.

"In terms of scope, it is the largest single highway project in Alberta's history," SNC-Lavalin said in a news release.

"Once completed, the partnership will operate and maintain the road and other existing infrastructure for the duration of the 30-year contract."

Construction is set to begin in May and the road is scheduled to be open to traffic by the fall of 2013.

"We are a Canadian leader in highway construction and we look forward to putting our expertise to work in Alberta, and to a long and successful relationship with the city of Calgary and the province," said Jim Burke, executive vice-president of SNC-Lavalin.

SNC-Lavalin is one of the leading engineering and construction groups in the world, with offices across Canada and in more than 35 other countries around the world, and is currently working in some 100 countries.

SNC-Lavalin has been present in Alberta since the 1950s and now has more than 1,600 employees in the province.

Acciona is a Spanish holding company engaged in construction and engineering, real estate, renewable energy, water treatment, environmental and urban services and transportation services.
