Their TV characters enjoyed only a brief star-crossed affair, but Mad Men co-stars Vincent Kartheiser and Alexis Bledel are now happily engaged in real life.

A rep for Bledel confirmed the engagement to US magazine earlier today. No date has been announced for the wedding between Gilmore Girls alumna Bledel, 31, and Kartheiser, 33, who plays unctuous ad man Pete Campbell on Mad Men. It will be the first marriage for both actors.

In recent years, Kartheiser has been romantically linked to actress Rachael Leigh Cook, while Bledel dated her former Gilmore Girls co-star Milo Ventimiglia for three years.

On the fifth season of Mad Men broadcast last year, Bledel played the recurring role of Beth Dawes, whose fleeting affair with Kartheiser's married character ended badly after she underwent shock therapy.

The sixth season of Mad Men begins airing April 7 on AMC.
