WEDDING BELLS

Talk host Jenny McCarthy and actor Donnie Wahlberg are engaged. McCarthy made the announcement on Wednesday's edition of The View. After hiding her hand beneath the show's desk, McCarthy proudly showed off her yellow sapphire engagement ring and blurted out, "I just got engaged!" McCarthy revealed that her 11-year-old son Evan helped Wahlberg, the older brother of Mark Wahlberg, prepare his proposal last weekend. McCarthy, 41, was previously married to actor John Mallory Asher from 1999 to 2005; Wahlberg has two sons from his nine-year marriage to Kim Fey, which ended in 2008. No date has been set for the wedding.

SHE'S BACK

Hold onto your wigs, dearies: Mrs. Doubtfire is coming back. Plans are underway to mount a sequel to the 1993 comedy starring Robin Williams as a divorced father who goes drag as a Scottish nanny in order to spend more time with his children. Williams is reportedly on board for the big-screen update and so is director Chris Columbus, who directed the original film. One cast member who won't be back is Mara Wilson, who played Williams' youngest daughter in the original film. Now 26, Wilson retired from acting in 2009 and officially recused herself from the sequel this week by tweeting, "I've been in some mediocre movies, but I've never been in a sequel. And I have no interest in being in one now."

SURPRISE GUEST

Nobody can say Taylor Swift isn't in touch with her fan base. The country superstar recently surprised a longtime fan named Gena Gabrielle, who sent the singer an invitation to her wedding and bridal shower but never expected her to show up. Swift couldn't make the wedding but she made the trip to Ohio last weekend to attend the shower, which left both Gabrielle and her guests speechless. "I had no idea Taylor was coming it was a complete surprise. She's an incredible person and amazing friend," tweeted Gabrielle. And Swift even came bearing gifts for the bride-to-be: cookware and a mixer.

ROCK TRIBUTE

Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry honoured the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings with a musical tribute. This week's ESPN special E:60 Presents Dream On: Stories from Boston's Strongest, which aired on the one-year anniversary of the explosions that killed three people and injured 264 others, featured the sixtysomething rockers performing an emotional version of their 1973 hit Dream On. Tyler provided vocals and piano while Perry played guitar with backing from the Southern California Children's Chorus. Tyler opened the song by saying, "This one's for you, Boston."

In the black-and-white trailer, the comedian is shown buying a bunch of roses and calmly putting on his favourite jacket – and then jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. As Louis emerges from the East River, there is one limp rose remaining, which he places between his teeth as he swims away. The fourth season of Louie will begin airing on FX on May 5.
