LEGAL BRIEFS

Paul Walker's mother has been denied permission to act as temporary guardian for the late actor's teen daughter. Cheryl Walker filed the guardianship application in Los Angeles Superior Court last month claiming The Fast and Furious star's daughter Meadow was at risk while living with her mother Rebecca Soteros, who has allegedly been struggling with alcoholism. A judge ruled this week that Meadow will continue living with her mother for the time being, although the ruling was issued without prejudice, which means Walker can reapply for guardianship in the future. Paul Walker was killed in November in a car crash. In his will, he stated that he wanted his mother to become Meadow's guardian in the event of his death.

SASSING ALEX

A recent Jeopardy contestant has set a new standard for cheeky game-show repartee. Halfway through Wednesday's episode, host Alex Trebek was performing his usual mid-show chat when he asked contestant Tom Kavanaugh how he planned to spend his winnings. Kavanaugh responded that he was working on a documentary about sweatshop labour around the globe, including "the eight-year-olds who made your fancy suit there, Alex." Trebek was clearly taken aback at the comment, which prompted Kavanaugh to ask, "Was that too low? Was that a low blow?"

BUSINESS AS USUAL

Nickelodeon is scrambling to defuse rumours that the popular teen series Sam & Cat is being cancelled. The rumoured cancellation was being attributed to one or both of two recent events: S&C star Jennette McCurdy, who plays Sam, was reportedly incensed that co-star Ariana Grande earned more money than her; and semi-racy photos of McCurdy in lingerie had been leaked online by parties unknown. On Thursday, Nickelodeon brushed aside the cancellation rumours and claimed that the show was on hiatus. "We are wrapping up what was an unusually long production cycle of Sam & Cat and everyone is understandably tired," said a Nickelodeon spokesperson.

SKIN GAME

Take note: Kate Winslet refuses to sign pictures showing her infamous nude scene from the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. The actress recently begged off signing a printed screenshot of the scene when a fan presented it to her at the London premiere of her new film Divergent. "I don't sign that one," said Winslet. "It feels very uncomfortable – why would you do that?" In the brief nude scene, Leonardo DiCaprio's character of Jack sketches Winslet's character, Rose, for a nude portrait. "It's still haunting me," said Winslet.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are willing to make fun of each other for a good cause. The lifelong friends and Good Will Hunting screenwriters recently filmed a video to promote their participation in a charity raffle that boasts a night out in Hollywood with the pair as grand prize. In the video, Affleck says, "You could learn about things that are actually true, like how incredibly short Matt Damon is." Damon counters with: "Or the fact that Ben Affleck's left eye twitches every time you say the word 'Gigli'." Proceeds from the online raffle will be split between Damon's Water.org charity and Affleck's Eastern Congo Initiative.
