Former best friends Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton were only taking occasional shots at each other in their ongoing Twitter feud. Now it's getting nasty.

Following an eventful weekend, the pop diva and the celebrity blogger are currently engaged in a vicious Twitter showdown with Gaga accusing Hilton of "stalking her" and Hilton making claims of death threats from Gaga's legions of "Little Monsters."

The spat reached fever pitch yesterday when some Gaga fans spotted Hilton inside her apartment building in New York. When they alerted the pop diva, she allegedly became so panicked that she says she called security on him and tweeted her fans asking them to take a picture of Hilton in her building.

Gaga's all upper-case tweet: "STAY AWAY FROM ME + MY FAMILY YOU ARE SICK TRYING TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN MY BUILDING TO STALK ME. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" (Gaga was in Los Angeles at the time of her tweet).

The tweet was published in the wake of ongoing Twitter tiffs between Gaga and Hilton, formerly close friends.

The specific source of their latest contretemps is unclear, though it's worth pointing out that only last week Hilton tweeted that Katy Perry's new single Roar is a better song than Gaga's newest single Applause. Mee-ow!

On Sunday in New York, the Gaga fans allegedly alerted building security of Hilton's presence at their master's behest. Gaga sources say that Hilton (real name Mario Lavandeira) was promptly escorted from the building.

Gaga and Perez were close friends when she began in the music business, but at some point they stopped being besties. Hilton has run several negative stories on the singer in the past year and has publicly accused the pop diva of having an "addiction problem."

On Friday, Gaga confirmed publicly to her 40 million Twitter followers that the bad blood between her and the online celebrity gadfly dates back to the hip surgery that sidelined her earlier this year.

"Still have the text Perez sent me of me in a wheelchair w the words KARMA written across + Madonna pointing a gun at me. Day of my accident" she tweeted.

Last week, Hilton announced he was moving to New York with his newborn son, mother and dog Teddy in tow.

Stated Hilton on his website: "I'm making a big change. We're all heading to New York City for a bit. For how long? I don't know. I decided that I wanted to go to New York and spend some time there."

Exactly how long? "As much time as I have a good time, as much time as I'm having fun. As much time as I want to be there," said Hilton sulkily.

So is it coincidence that on Sunday Gaga tweeted: "DO I NEED TO BE SHOT IT [sic] IN THE HEAD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIM AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT HARASSES ME HAS GONE TOO FAR? IM A HUMAN BEING"?

And out of the blue this morning at 3:14 a.m. ET, Hilton seemed to add fuel to the fire with his cryptic tweet: "Drugs don't just ruin lives. They run friendships and careers too. Stay away!!!!"

Hilton also issued a more formal response to Gaga's stalking claims this morning to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I am a critic and not a stalker," he said. "My heart hurts that my former very good friend Lady Gaga, a person I used to call my 'wifey' and travelled the world with, is making very public and very untrue allegations about me on Twitter."

Hilton went on to say, "While it is still too painful for me to go into detail about why I chose to no longer make her a part of my life, I will say that I am a critic and not a stalker."

Hilton also claims that he is unable to sleep because Gaga's fans have been threatening his life and the life of his son.

The blogger and his family have been subjected to a steady stream of nasty comments from Twitter accounts claiming to support Gaga. The comments have included requests for Hilton to kill himself, to die of AIDS and threats to kill his adopted son.
