A fair trade lip balm that's also compostable? A eco-enthusiast's dream

The product

Sweet Leaf Bath Co. Beeswax Lip Balm

The promise

Story continues below advertisement

From one of only eight Fairtrade Canada licensed beauty companies comes the first lip balm in a 100-per-cent compostable eco-tube. Made using only the purest organic oils and butters, the balm promises to leave lips conditioned, repaired and protected from the elements, while the new tube holds up to 30 per cent more product than traditional plastic tubes.

How it works

Organic avocado oil, beeswax, jojoba oil, vitamin E and fair-trade certified shea butter condition and smooth lips after just a few uses. The last ingredient's vitamins and fatty acids also provide a natural sunscreen equivalent to SPF 15 and the absence of parabens allows the product to be absorbed more readily, which means that, over time, you will need less product to achieve soft lips. It's available in peppermint, pomegranate and chocolate-raspberry.

How to use it

Apply to lips as needed.

The bottom line

I'm a big fan of lip balms that come in a tube. There's something about a pot that really bugs me, especially since I display Howard Hughesian tendencies that shift my mind into high-gear germophobia when I think about sticking a dirty digit into a pot of product that then gets deposited on my mouth. I also don't understand why any time I pull out a pot of balm there's always someone asking to stick her finger in it. I mean, ew, right? Sadly, my penchant for plastic tubes means that I'm contributing to the more than 25 million used in Canada every year. Turns out they leach hormone disrupters and carcinogens into the products and into the environment, too. Since making the switch to Sweet Leaf, though, I can enjoy germ-free hydration without the added environmental guilt. It's a win-win for my body and soul. Even Howard Hughes would be proud.
