The question

Professional facials are expensive and time-consuming. Are they worth it?

The answer

I have experienced both professional and not-so-professional facials and I say going to a pro is definitely worth the time and money.

A facial, when performed by someone with the proper training, delivers more than just a temple massage and steam. Professional facials are meant to clean deeper than you can at home and also to address serious skin issues, such as acne or dehydration. An aesthetician is trained to ask the right questions, recognize issues and remedy problems with the proper products and procedures.

How often facials are needed varies, so ask your aesthetician's opinion on that, too. Some people require monthly visits, others can get away with two or three times a year. While you are there, ask questions about your skin and what you can do to extend the life of your facial at home. Leave the extractions to the pros, but ask about masques, serums and exfoliating. A slight change in your daily routine based on professional recommendations could save you both time and money in the long run.
