Estée Lauder Sumptuous Two Tone Eye-Opening Mascara

The promise

Give your eyes an instant lift with this dual-ended mascara inspired by Estée Lauder creative makeup director Tom Pecheux's secret backstage technique. Using one brush to coat top lashes in black and another to apply a complementary colour on the bottom lashes makes eyes instantly brighter, bigger and more youthful-looking.

How it works

The ultralight formula uses thickening fibres to lift upper lashes and fill in any sparse spots, adding volume and curl in a deep black shade. Meanwhile, bottom lashes are delicately defined with a microbrush, specially designed for those hard-to-reach areas that you normally have to force open your eyes really wide and contort your mouth into an exaggerated downturn to reach. Available in bold black/rich brown, and the limited-edition bold black/rich blue and bold black/rich plum, the mascara is ophthalmologist-tested and safe for contact-lens wearers.

How to use it

Coat upper lashes in black with the large brush and use the smaller brush to define bottom lashes with the secondary colour.

The bottom line

When I'm feeling really fancy, I like to wear eyeliner. It's usually in honour of a special occasion, such as a night at the ballet, a black-tie event or an unscheduled hair-washing. Lately my favourite way to wear eyeliner is very French and gamine-like with an insouciant flick at the outer corner of my eye. But it's been difficult to find a mascara that can fan out my eyelashes with coquettish flair without overpowering my very careful eyeliner handiwork.

Now I search no more, because this mascara does a beautiful job of lengthening my upper lashes and giving them the right amount of winky, eye-batting flirtatiousness while defining the lower lashes to make them noticeable without competing for the main stage. The effect is kind of like Black Swan, with considerably less psychotic energy.
