The question

My daughter is 13 years old and very keen to start wearing makeup. I'd like to give her a gentle introduction to products that won't smudge and aren't too over-the-top. What would look good on someone with hazel eyes and light-brown hair with red highlights?

The answer

There are four basic products that will satisfy her desire to wear makeup and leave you at peace: tinted moisturizer, brow gel, tinted lip balm and mascara. Using a tinted moisturizer, like Stila's water-resistant formula with an SPF of 20, will let her feel like she is wearing makeup, but it deposits very little colour and in turn protects the skin.

Brow gel will keep healthy, full brows in place without adding any colour. Maybelline New York Baby Lips lip balm with SPF 20 in Pink Punch is ideal for this situation, too, delivering hydrating protection with just a hint of colour. Last, try a waterproof mascara. Black will be noticeable and a bit too harsh, but a brown mascara will add definition to her lash line, and a waterproof formula means it won't run off during the day.
