The question

I have been going to the same hair stylist for a year now and I've run into a problem. He's bossy and pushy and rarely listens to what I have to say. I hate even having to go to the salon, as he makes me feel like I don't have a clue and just does whatever he wants. How can I take control of the situation without being rude?

The answer

My first thought is: CHANGE STYLISTS! You should never allow anyone to make you feel that uncomfortable, especially when you're paying for the service. If your stylist offers guidance, it's good to listen and take it into consideration. But if he or she isn't listening to a word you say, then you need to move on. It might be a bit awkward to "break up" with him, but, as with any bad relationship, there's no point in sticking it out and hoping it'll get better when the lines of communication aren't working. Either talk to him about it or find another stylist. Most salons offer free consultations before any snipping occurs, so search out someone who gets you and your style – and who actually listens!
