Dynamic duo
Eye makeup on the spring/summer runways was a crayon box of colour: Witness the pastel streaks at Chanel, the heavy canary-yellow liner at Vionnet and the colourblocked lids at Manish Arora. “It’s about being an individual, breaking the rules and standing out in a crowd,” says makeup artist Blair Petty, who created the looks featured here. For a striking, modern and, yes, wearable take on the vibrancy trend, Petty recommends limiting your palette to two hits of colour. (Those multihued eyes at Chanel are best left on the catwalk.) Here’s how to do it: Line your lower water line with a waterproof gel liner in a bright teal or blue shade. For added drama, apply black mascara and then dust a teal or blue eyeshadow onto the tips of your lashes. For the perfect pop, add a contrasting colour – Petty used a summery shade of coral – on the inner corner of your eye. “The key is to pick shades that compliment each other, use them sparingly and keep the rest of your face bare,” he says.

Golden girl
If the Midas-touched lids at Dior and Jason Wu proved anything, it’s that gold makes laid-back summer attire appear more luxe. “Gold looks expensive – think Bianca Jagger summering on a yacht in the Mediterranean. It just looks luxurious,” says Petty. He recommends that women with fair skin opt for a champagne shade, while those with a medium to olive skin tone go for a yellowgold hue. For women with a darker complexion, a deeper bronze hue is most flattering. Instead of relying on a myriad of powders, apply a waterproof, cream-based eyeshadow (it won’t cake or crease midday) on your lash line and blend outwards. “Mixing metals like yellow, rose and white gold will add dimension and enhance the eye area,” Petty says. He suggests dabbing a white gold on the inner corner of your eye or sweeping a lighter, paler shade of gold across the brow bone.

Purple craze
Makeup artists must have been watching old Dynasty episodes of late, because purple eyes à la Joan Collins are back in a big way. On the runways, shades of lilac, lavender and Radiant Orchid (the 2014 Pantone colour of the year) were applied with gusto at shows such as Holly Fulton. To avoid looking overly retro, “you want to use one shade to define your eye shape,” says Petty. “It’s about being simple and precise.” Use an eyeshadow brush to apply an even wash of colour – in either a cream or powder formula – to your eyelid, being careful not to extend the colour into the crease or on the brow bone. Finish the eye with a coat of black mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. Be sure, too, to keep the rest of your makeup, especially on your lips, to an absolute minimum, lest you look like an extra in The Wedding Singer.
