Since taking over design duties at Balenciaga, the fashion world has wondered how Alexander Wang would manage differentiating his own New York-based label from the signature he’s attempting to create at the Parisian house. Judging by his spring show on Sept. 7, Wang is focused on reinforcing its reputation for luxe streetwear.

The presentation’s styling was full of indie attitude, from smocks that were only buttoned up at the collar to jackets half falling off the models’ shoulders. Wang even managed to make opera gloves seem subversive, pairing them with bandeau tops and high-waisted shorts.

There’s been oodles of organza on the New York catwalks, which isn’t surprising considering that designers are really into playing with both transparency and structured shapes right now. The Parental Advisory sweatshirt sported by Rolling Stone offspring Georgia May Jagger is the most explicit example of the trend yet.

Lots of New York shows attract perfectly primped celebrities wearing their favourite midday cocktail dresses, but Wang’s lineup of front-row followers are decidedly more downtown. Kanye West, Courtney Love, photographer Terry Richardson and singer Solange all added to the spring show’s cool quotient.

From a distance, the laser-cut treatment Wang applied to leather coats, knife-pleated skirts and oversized T-shirts looked like an abstract pattern. Look closer and it all reads “Alexander Wang” in the brand’s block-letter font.

When single-soled stilettos made a big comeback for fall, many trend-watchers were proclaiming the end of the platform. Hold that death notice! If Wang’s chunky heels are any indication, the sky-high pump is already poised for a comeback.
