How to pull off the shawl-collar cardigan

Kevin Van Paassen/Kevin Van Paassen/The Globe and Mail

Warming up at work this winter can be done with a lot more dignity than breaking out the desk-side blanket. Consider the shawl-collar cardigan, a men's wear staple this season, instead.

With its classic shape and turned out lapels, it's a softer, warmer approach to both suiting and Snuggie.

1. Don't be afraid to dress it up. The shape of the sweater lends itself to more formal silhouettes, so keep it polished with trousers, a button-up shirt and tie. If you're feeling really bold, reach for the bow tie.

2. Save Gucci's fey fair isle style (above left) for haute holidays. At the office, stick to solids such as navy, grey and black to tone down the casual nature of the knit.

3. Shawl-collar cardigans are definitely timeless, but keep in mind that this season's silhouette fits close to the body. Anything bulkier and you'll risk looking like grandpa.
