Previously prevalent only at craft fairs and grandma's house, crochet is heating up this summer, with designers taking the decorative knit for a spin on the runways in the form of dresses, skirts and blouses. At the office, however, it's key to avoid getting tangled in the fabric's well-known kitsch factor. Here's how.

1. Layer, layer, layer. This is an open knit, so make sure you wear a camisole and appropriate bra underneath, depending on the type of coverage your workplace demands.

2. Opt for a small hit of the knit by choosing a top instead of a dress, as Vivienne Tam did for her spring runway presentation.

3. Avoid looking too precious. Crochet is pretty, yes, but keep it from getting too cutesy with hard lines in a pair of trousers, polished heels or wedges and a frame bag.
