Although it's not a precious stone per se, agate is far from your run-of-the-mill rock.

Characterized by its fineness of grain and brightness of colour, the stone is making a splash this fall, particularly on necklaces. Whether you choose a collection of small ones grouped together on a slinky string or a single hunk hanging from a hefty chain, you'll be making a pretty, laidback statement. Call them the anti-pearls.
