There’s no truer blue this season than pale indigo. In collections as haute as Barbara Bui and as accessible as Joe Fresh, jackets, shirts and jeans are cut from bleached fabrics that are further distressed with frayed edges and stitched-on patches. Instead of giving pieces a dressed-down look, however, these rough-and-tough techniques add an artisanal flair that’s anything but basic.

Runway

As Canadian as pairing denim with denim is, it’s more casual-Friday friendly to mix a slouchy chambray shirt with classic khaki trousers.

The abstract texture of the denim shown at Barbara Bui (above left) puts a unique spin on the standard jean jacket, but washed blues look more professional if the fabric has a cleaner finish.

Real way

Even within the pale range of denim, there are numerous tones to choose from. A light slate is more versatile than a baby blue.
