Ever wonder what becomes of those celebrity dresses after their turn on the red carpet? Well, one of them went to the prom and, presumably, blew all those cheap mall frocks out of the water.
Kayla Staskiewicz of Waterford, Mich., stepped out in the glittery floor-length Versace dress actress Christina Ricci wore to the Oscars in 1999 to her prom earlier this month. No, her parents didn't fork over the $25,000 (U.S.) cost.
Ms. Staskiewicz, 17, won the right to wear the couture piece in a contest run by a Detroit media company. Her mother, Gayle, told a reporter that it was her husband, Mike, who entered his daughter's name in the contest.
"He thought our daughter would look beautiful in that dress and with the size being only a zero, he knew she would have a good chance to fit into it because she is very small," she told the Oakland Press.
"My mom kept calling me Cinderella," Ms. Staskiewicz added.
Indeed, 10 other winning girls had tried on the slender dress unsuccessfully before Ms. Staskiewicz was zipped in.
Like Cinderella, she didn't get to keep the fantasy dress, but gave it back to the media company, which runs ClickonDetroit.com and the television station WDIV-TV. The dress may be raffled off again, according to a spokesman.
There was even a fairy-tale godmother, of sorts. Well, a godfather. Vintage clothing dealer Christos Garkinos, a Detroit native known for dressing celebrities out of his two Hollywood boutiques, wanted to do something nice for his hometown. He announced the contest in a fashion segment about prom style.
