This retro boot is making its comeback

If any popular coinage is due for a connotative overhaul, surely it's "cougar." Fortunately, the iconic red-tongued Pillow Boots known by legions of teens in the 1980s as Cougars are back on the scene to help.

Still made in Canada, the new limited-edition versions are less square than their predecessors but still do a good job of evoking the original, broadly admired in the old days for bridging social clans from preps to metal heads, annoying parents (when worn with the red tongue hanging out in an insolent wag) and defying the elements in style.

Grown women in search of good winter boots will likely appreciate the last detail the most – not to mention a newfound opportunity to use the wildcat's name without wincing.
