Which is best: sunscreen or moisturizer or foundation with SPF?

The question

When it comes to sun protection, is it better to use sunscreen, a moisturizer with SPF or a foundation with SPF?

The answer

Truth be told, any form of sun protection is better than nothing. Not enough people wear sunscreen on a daily basis, so whether you're getting an SPF in your moisturizer, foundation or on its own, you're doing your skin justice by protecting it.

If you can find a great moisturizer or a foundation that contains an SPF factor of 30 or higher, grab them and don't look back. But keep in mind that you need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day for it to remain effective, and slapping on layer after layer of foundation is not an ideal scenario.

My current go-to for daily sun protection is Dermalogica's Skin Defense Booster SPF 50 because it's versatile enough to be worn alone or mixed in with your moisturizer or foundation. And I can't let you get away without a few preachy words on what to look for when choosing a sunscreen. It's vital to look for a "broad-spectrum" product, meaning it has both UVA and UVB protection. If the bottle doesn't have those words, put it down and move on to a sunscreen that does.
