Wish you were in Brazil lately?

You may not be able to simulate the soccer pitch in your living room but perhaps you can channel a Brazilian sweet shop.

These traditional truffle-like candies are known as brigadeiros and are created by cooking sweetened condensed milk with cocoa; think of a rich pop of dulce de leche.

Whether your team is winning or losing you can celebrate or drown your sorrows Brazilian style. If you're a true fan, pick coloured sprinkles that match the flag of your favourite team.

Servings: 24 to 30 chocolates.

Ingredients

300-ml can of sweetened condensed milk

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

Pinch of salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Method

In a medium, heavy-bottom pan add milk, cocoa powder, salt and butter.

Over medium-low heat (you don’t want this bubbling aggressively), stir constantly to prevent burning and reduce the mixture until it is very thick, shiny and starts to pull away from the bottom of the pan (I started by using a whisk to help combine everything, then switched to a spatula to get into the corner). This should take 15-20 minutes.

Pour into an 8 x 8 baking dish (or a similar-sized dish) and then allow to cool in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Once cooled, roll into balls about the size of a teaspoon – you can scoop with a teaspoon or just estimate but slightly damp or buttered hands will help keep the balls from sticking.

Roll the balls in chocolate or coloured sprinkles (cocoa powder, coconut flakes or crushed pistachios also works).
