Ganton & Larsen Prospect Winery Larch Tree Hill Riesling 2010, BC VQA Okanagan Valley $12.99

Ganton & Larsen's budget-minded wines offer some of British Columbia's best values: You'll find no better domestic Riesling at this modest price. (The winery is part of the Mission Hill family, though it doesn't play on that lineage.) Here's a go-to, uncomplicated wine to serve any large crowd. But it's also ideal to sip while you're in relax mode on a hot summer day, enjoying the breezy acidity, lower alcohol (12.5 per cent) and notes of nectarine and lime zest. This fruity Riesling is good on its own and also pairs well with delicate or raw fish, sweet peas, asparagus, and dishes seasoned with warm Asian spices. Plus just about everything in the picnic hamper. The 2011 vintage is now available, but if there's a choice, I prefer the more aromatic 2010. Available at B.C. Liquor Stores, VQA and private wine shops.
