Wine review: Thelema Mountain Red 2011, South Africa

Western Cape
Red blend
Food Pairing
Game meats such as venison stew, boar sausages, bison burgers

"Mountain Red" sounds manly and rugged. In a way so is the wine. Full-bodied and dense, it shows dense fruit along with a good dose of cedar and loamy underbrush. There's an odd and oddly compelling assortment of grapes in the blend: shiraz, petite verdot, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, grenache and cabernet franc – as though the Rhône Valley had amalgamated with Bordeaux. It would pair nicely with game meats, such as venison stew, boar sausages or bison burgers. A bargain for summer grilling (at least at the Ontario price); $19.99 in B.C. (ouch), various prices in Alberta, $14.48 in Manitoba.
