This comes from Bierzo, a region of northwest Spain whose old vineyards had been declining – or entirely neglected – until new winemakers saw the potential. Mencia, a local red grape, has been compared with pinot noir and gamay for its fruitiness. It's also high in acidity, so perhaps is not for everyone. This example is well crafted, with medium-full concentration, a lively berry core and dollop of dry earth. Great for serrano-ham-based tapas, fatty fish such as salmon, or grilled pork chops. Available in Ontario.
