Tinhorn Creek Oldfield Series Syrah 2009, British Columbia

$34.99 in B.C.

Syrah from New World regions can often raise the hairs on your back (if you have any) with their power. This one, though pushing a formidable 14.6-per-cent alcohol, is lighter than most, if still full-bodied. Rhône-like in its pronounced whiff of cracked pepper, it's brimming with berries, fig and herbs.
