A prostate cancer charity has decided to return thousands of dollars in donations that were given as part of a crude joke related to leaked nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities, reports the Telegraph.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation, based in Santa Monica, Calif., is sending back about $6,000 (U.S.) in donations from users of the website Reddit.

On Sunday, nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and several other celebrities were leaked on Reddit.

In response, one user suggested people donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation "in honour of Jennifer Lawrence."

As the Daily Dot reports, at one point the Reddit community was the charity's top donor.

Some people on Reddit have claimed that Lawrence has supported the charity in the past, although this has not been confirmed.

But as Gawker's Andy Cush was smart enough to figure out, the donations "in honour of Jennifer Lawrence" are spurred by a gross joke.

"(Get it? Masturbation may reduce risk of prostate cancer in men, and many of these men, upon viewing the photos – you're smart, you get it)" explained Cush.

Even without making the explicit link to the joke, plenty of people were appalled at the donation drive.

The charity quickly distanced itself from the donation drive when it learned where the money was coming from.

"We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner," it said in a statement. "Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with out own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post."
