The most comprehensive touring exhibit ever presented on the ancient city of Petra will make its Canadian premiere at Calgary's Glenbow Museum. Petra: Lost City of Stone, running Oct. 29 to Feb. 20, 2006, was organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the Cincinnati Art Museum. It features about 200 exceptional objects on loan from collections in Jordan and Europe - many on view for the first time.

The exhibit includes stone sculptures and reliefs, ceramics, metalwork, stuccowork, ancient inscriptions, drawings, prints and several Nabataean monuments. The metropolis of Petra was carved from the red sandstone in the desert cliffs of southern Jordan (the Khazneh, or treasury, is pictured at left). It thrived as a crossroads of trade until most of it was destroyed by an earthquake in 363 A.D.

From the Glenbow, the exhibit moves to the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec.
