Breast cancer patients have a new Canadian online resource to help them through the recovery phase of their illness.

The website provides an overview of breast reconstruction options, ranging from doing nothing to a variety of surgical procedures. The site also helps women locate a surgeon in their area.

Nicolas Guay, a surgeon at the Ottawa Hospital, has been the driving force behind the website's creation. After realizing most patients are not fully informed about what can be done, he contacted about 170 doctors across Canada to create a consensus document on the pros and cons of various procedures. That document now forms the cornerstone of the interactive website – breastreconstructioncanada.ca.

"Patients can make their own decisions about their care if they are given the right tools," said Dr. Guay.
