This fall, The Globe and Mail is partnering with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for a three-month investigation of the challenges that Canadian hospitals face every day and what patients, doctors, nurses and other vital staffers think needs to be done to improve the hospital experience.

Deb Carew

With more than 30 years of health-care experience, Carew is director of operations for the hospital’s Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Program and patient flow.

Dr. Avery Nathens

An attending trauma surgeon and senior scientist, Nathens is Sunnybrook’s chief of surgery. His research interests include trauma system effectiveness and quality of trauma care.

Dr.Graham Slaughter

An internal-medicine physician and clinician teacher, Slaughter’s area of academic interest is ambulatory medicine, and diversion of patients from in-patient medicine.

Dr. Andy Smith

The hospital’s chair of general surgery and executive vice-president and chief medical executive. His major clinical and research interest is metastatic, locally recurrent and locally advanced colorectal cancer and knowledge translation.
