The question

Do you have any suggestions for picking a festive nail treatment?

The answer

The big hits this season are metallics in deep, rich shades, soft nudes and neutrals with contrasting tips, plus forms of nail art – a trend still on the rise.

We have been seeing more sophisticated and refined nail art as the months go by: Left behind are the 3-D embellishments and animal-face imagery and, instead, the two-toned slim silhouette mani, the reverse French mani and the moderately patterned mani are all are making their way into the mainstream.

If you've read my column before, you may have noticed my disdain for sparkle-based makeup. Polish, however, is the one place where you can lay it on thick, especially at this time of year. If DIY nail art seems daunting, try out the latest magnetic polishes instead.

Essie's new line of Repstyle magnetic polishes come in metallic shades from glitzy gold and silver to rich red, green and blue. Two coats of polish and just a matter of seconds with the accompanying magnet are all it takes to create professional-looking tips for any holiday affair.
