Designer sunglasses (Amy Verner) There's no doubt that statement shades conceal a long night. They can also be a conversation starter as my round, deep blue Paul Smith frames have proved. Oh, and I staunchly prefer my eyewear sans logo; I do not wish to be a walking billboard.Fernando Morales/The Globe and Mail

A structured bag (Amy Verner) Slouchy bags pack better and hold more. But I currently prefer a firmer one, such as this Celine bag. Mine belonged to my grandmother and gives a completeness to my look. I stuff it with socks or lingerie in my suitcase and that's that.

Motorcycle jacket (Amy Verner) Downpours or heat waves notwithstanding, a leather motorcycle jacket is ideal outerwear. I throw it on over anything, day or night. Mine is from Balenciaga and cost a month's rent, but I will still be wearing it decades from now.

Stylish sneakers (Amy Verner) A disproportionate amount of my suitcase gets allocated to footwear. Stylish kicks – such as these streamlined Lanvins – are essential. Unless you have a chauffeur, navigating fashion week means a lot of traipsing, mad dashing and standing - and none of that is fun in mega-platforms.

Santa Maria Novella cologne (Danny Sinopoli) When you're far from home, familiarity can be comforting, which is why I always pack my favourite scent: Santa Maria Novella's Acqua di Colonia Russa. I pick up a bottle when I'm in Rome or New York - or order it online, $55 (U.S.); lafcony.com.Deborah Baic/The Globe and Mail

Bose headphones (Danny Sinopoli) Luckily, I'm one of those people who can actually sleep on airplanes - but only if I'm wearing my Bose QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones. $349.99 at Bose dealers across Canada (bose.ca).Deborah Baic/The Globe and Mail

Travel wallet (Danny Sinopoli) I carry a travel wallet containing my passport, credit cards and tickets around my neck. When an Air France jet skidded off a Toronto runway, many passengers were stuck in limbo because they lacked their documents. I will not be one of those people. $7; mec.caDeborah Baic/The Globe and Mail

Mini surge protector (Danny Sinopoli) If I have my laptop or BlackBerry with me, I'll be sure to bring my Belkin Mini Surge Protector, which guards, charges and powers up to three devices. $24.99 through belkin.com.Deborah Baic/The Globe and Mail
