Toronto-based designer Deborah Moss, co-founder of Moss & Lam, discusses how sketching is essential to her creative process.

I have always doodled. It's [an outlet for] a lot of nervous energy and sometimes something is floating around in your head. Sometimes when I'm in a meeting I am doodling because it helps me think. When I am working on a project, I will grab a piece of scrap paper and start drawing. Those sketches are usually important just for inspiration. Then sometimes they have to be refined to share with other people.

The sketch

This sketch for the interior of Primehouse [a steakhouse in New York] was scrawled in a sketchbook while I was sitting on a dock up north and having to contemplate New York for a sudden deadline. While the city was far away physically, it is always in my heart.

The design

Once the sketch was approved, it was digitally remastered for execution by our painters. It ended up being painted on black velvet panels.
