The question
My living room already has crown moulding. What are some other ways of adding architectural interest?
The answer
Crown moulding, which runs along the seam where a wall meets the ceiling, is just the beginning when it comes to embellishments. For instance, modernist designers often create a "reveal," which is a measured gap between a wall and ceiling. This feature requires extremely careful installation.
Generally, I find there is more leeway when adding layers, such as simple panel mouldings, that give extra dimension and provide the opportunity to use a contrasting finish.
Ceiling medallions can also softly enhance a room. I love the idea of applying silver leaf to the ceiling and leaving the medallion white and moon-like.
There are so many creative ways to use architectural enhancements, so forget today's sterile ultramodern rooms; indeed, give me an embellished room and I will install a slick, minimalist white sectional, sit back and enjoy the juxtaposition.
