Emma Reddington's bedroom
An Art Gallery of Ontario exhibit designer, Emma Reddington has lived for the past three years with her husband, Myles McCutcheon, and their young son, Henry, in a 1905 detached Victorian in Toronto's Parkdale area, whose interior design she oversaw herself. No stranger to decor, Reddington is part-owner of the design firm Marion Melbourne and creator of an interiors website (www.themarionhousebook.com). The master bedroom is her favourite room for the way it blends classic and bohemian features: "It just invites you to spend the day in bed reading," she says.
The linens
"If I have one true weakness, it is for bed linens. The gold damask coverlet is by Frette and was purchased on holiday in Verona, Italy. The sheets are by DwellStudio. The cream cotton bedspread is made in India and was purchased in Milan across the street from the famed lifestyle store 10 Corso Como."
The kilim pillows
"I made the two kilim pillows out of an old Turkish rug I found at Legacy Vintage in Cobourg, Ont. The rug was an odd size that didn't work in any of our rooms, so I cut it up and made it into a series of floor and throw pillows."
The bench and the bed
"Dawson Campbell of Relik Design made both of them for me. He works out of a barn up in Orono, Ont. The bed is made from reclaimed Douglas fir harvested from an old barn. I designed the bed so that it would function as both a headboard and a credenza if we should decide to use it somewhere else down the road. It has three drawers finished with bone and brass knobs."
The two pieces of art on the wall
"They're by Francesco Clemente. They are etchings from his Geography Suite; the one on top is West and the bottom is South. My sister, who lives in Victoria, B.C., has the other two works, North and East – although from our geographic locations, it should be the other way around."
The fireplace
"It's original to the house, although we recently had it retiled in this Carrara marble shell motif. Unfortunately, the fireplace doesn't work."
The woven bowl on the floor
"I purchased this at Holy Cow! on Queen Street East. It's where I store all my scarves. I need all of the extra storage space I can get since my home also boasts Victorian-sized closets, which means I don't even have enough room to hang a hanger perpendicularly."
