The question

I want to get some paintings or prints for my living room, but I don't know much about art. What are some tips for choosing what to hang?

The answer

Art is such a personal choice; you need to go out there and look at a lot of it until you find something that genuinely speaks to you.

Starting with prints is a great idea, as they are less of an investment. Hanging groups of similar pieces can have a lot of impact, so – perhaps once you've found an artist you like – buy a couple of his or her prints, give them matching frames and hang your first diptych.

In the case of paintings, which are generally more expensive, be sure to buy what you love but also consider the investment side of the equation. Visit galleries and ask questions.

You can even consult an art expert if you want to feel fully informed about what you are buying. Young, emerging artists are definitely cheaper than their more established counterparts, but may not appreciate as much in value.

Local art fairs can be great venues for newcomers to the scene, offering a range of artists and prices under one roof. If you want to get serious, set aside a yearly spending allowance for this and enjoy your journey through the art world.
