Plain paper and porcelain pottery are, in almost every way, polar opposites. The former is flimsy and fungible. The latter is precious and display-worthy. Quebec-based design partners Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson (who run a studio called Atelier Make) use both with finesse.
As home decor, they produce pretty, practical ceramics – mugs, bowls and plates. For art galleries (they've shown in Vancouver, Montreal and Istanbul), the pair cuts out intricate, paper dioramas that are as ephemeral as they are incredible. Some of Ersan and Robson's most interesting work brings the two materials together.
The Lantern series is technically pottery, but takes its inspiration from paper-bag luminaria (the kind that is common at summer weddings and picnics). The finish is matte and soft like a basic bond (it's even stamped with typewriterly text). The enclosure is rolled as thinly as a piece of vellum, so as the flame flickers, it creates a gentle glow.
