The question

What is your favourite type of bedroom-window covering? (I need total darkness to sleep.)

The answer

Considering the issues involved – such as how much you want to cover up and what is most comfortable for you – selecting window coverings for your boudoir is a lot like picking undergarments: You need to determine if you are a thong or a full-brief type of person. Skimpy sheers would let you enjoy the view, but might keep you awake.

Personally, I prefer a blackout sunshade in a fixed (motorized) channel for complete darkness, with a layer of full linen drapery (also motorized) alongside. The sunshade can be hidden in the ceiling or a valance box. I also like natural materials such as linen for bedrooms, leaving silks for fancy rooms. I reserve shutters for kitchen and bathrooms and avoid balloon drapes at all costs, as they tend to catch dust and we all know that drapes (like briefs) must always be kept clean.
