When Danielle Bryk remodelled her three-storey, semi-detached Edwardian home in Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood, she decided to keep the master bedroom for herself – instead of giving it to her kidsChloë Ellingson/The Globe and Mail

Celebrity home renovator Danielle Bryk, star of HGTV's Bryk House and its sequel, A Bryk at a Time, has remodelled six houses of her own in the 20 years since she married Greg, her partner in sawdust. The home where they currently live is no exception. Located in Toronto's Beach neighbourhood, the three-storey, semi-detached Edwardian was nearly falling down when they spotted it three years ago, says the mother of three, who studied literature and art history at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., before embarking on a career with a hammer. "It was so bad that the bank didn't want to finance it, deeming it inhabitable," Bryk says. But that didn't stop her. With her husband's help, she gutted the home, building it up again a room at a time. Her favourite has ended up being her master bedroom, where she restored the original fireplace by stripping the mantel and adding new tile. "It's the first time in our marriage that we have kept the master bedroom for ourselves instead of giving it to the kids," she says. "I just love that I can lie in bed, reading a book with a fire blazing, knowing it's mine."

1. The mirror

This is from West Elm. I like way it casually leans against the wall. Plus, the reaction of my two dogs when they see their reflections provides endless entertainment."

2. The bed

"This is also from West Elm and has a high leather-tufted headboard, which we wanted after seeing one like it during a weekend getaway at Langdon Hall."

3. The clothing rack

"I made the clothes rack myself with black pipe. I love open storage for clothing. If I can't see it, I forget about it. The industrial vibe reminds me of when I lived in New York – my East Village days."

4. The chandelier

"This is an antique I found at a store on Kingston Road. I love the quality of the Spanish brass and the crystals as well. It's one of my favourite things in the room. I love how everything else kind of revolves around it."

5. The throw

"This is a camel-coloured cashmere throw from Restoration Hardware, which my sister got me for my birthday. My sister is always giving me little bits of luxury that I would never spend the money on for myself."

6. The curtains

"These are a bunch of sheers that I put over the bay window to allow a lot of natural sunlight to fill the room."

7. The chair

"This antique belonged to my grandmother on my father's side. My sister and I fight over it all the time. I love the bold burst of colour on the antique frame."

8. The flooring

"This is the original stripped hardwood. It's not perfect. We sometimes get splinters, but I just love the character of it."
