Sorry, dudes. Your dad is hipper than you

Whether you know it or not, your dad is supercool. Ironic Ts, craft beers, peacoats, raging, retro bikes - everything you think is cool, your dad was rocking way back when. Brad Getty has been compiling the proof of countless stylin' progenitors on his blog Dads Are the Original Hipsters.

Each blog entry features a photograph of a man from a bygone era, displaying some element of cool that defines today's hipsters, each with a wry explanation of why your dad is cooler than you are. Its tagline: "Sorry hipsters, your dad was the original hipster and he was killing it back in the day."

Mr. Getty, a 26-year-old who hails from Michigan and now lives in San Francisco, where he works as a writer in advertising, started the blog in January. Since then it's gone viral, and the phenomenon has scored him a book deal, set to be released next year in the lead-up to Father's Day.

The idea for the blog came to Mr. Getty after he discovered his dad's vintage bike and camera, possessions that every self-respecting hipster covets these days. Then, on a trip home when Mr. Getty was in the middle of a mustache-growing competition with friends, his father picked him up at the airport with a mustache fuller, thicker and cooler than any he could ever hope to grow - "just to prove that he was more of a man than me," Mr. Getty jokes. "It just kind of hit me. I was like, 'Holy crap, my dad's a hipster.' "

But the appeal of the blog isn't simply that dads were once supercool, Mr. Getty says. Instead, it's the realization that your dad chose you over being supercool. "One thing I think lot of people haven't really wanted to realize is that their dad had an awesome lifestyle that he gave up to fully support their kid," Mr. Getty says. "My parents were awesome, but they gave up their awesomeness so that I could have a great life."

And that, hipsters, is truly supercool.
