Toronto Symphony Orchestra musicians Theo Chan and Audrey Good first bonded over a love of burgers. Here's how the engaged couple make beautiful music, on and off the stage.

Who: Theo Chan, 34, double-bass player; Audrey Good, 32, French-horn player

Relationship status: Engaged since May, 2017

Location: Toronto

For the love of burgers

Audrey: There are about 90 people in the orchestra, so you have different groups – the woodwinds, the brass. I remember hearing about a new bass player when Theo joined in 2012, but we never spent time together. And then in 2014, I got a new apartment and I threw a party and invited a larger group.

Theo: I went with a friend. Audrey and I started talking about restaurants we like and by the end of the conversation, we had decided to embark on a quest to find Toronto's best burger. We called it a burger safari.

Audrey: I wasn't thinking of it as a date at that point. It seemed dangerous to date a colleague.

Theo: The first burger we tried was at Dangerous Dan's. We also split a poutine and after, I said we should order the fried Snickers bar.

Audrey: The fried Snickers. That's when I knew I loved him. We don't eat like that all the time, just to be clear.

Harmony at home

Theo: Initially, we tried to keep things quiet. We didn't want our relationship to be water-cooler chatter. And then, everyone found out at the same time when we were on a work trip and they were handing out room keys. Both of our names were on the same envelope.

Audrey: There are pros and cons to working with your partner. It is amazing to have someone who really understands. We do try to limit the amount of work talk, though. We got some advice early on from another TSO couple who told us to set an egg timer and then, once time's up, no more shop talk.

We said yes

Audrey: We both hate surprises, so every step of our relationship has been discussed. I was involved in picking the ring.

Theo: Last spring, the TSO went to Israel. I was going to propose there. We thought that would be romantic and memorable, but as the date got closer, we were both really stressed preparing for the trip.

Audrey: One day before we left, we were hanging around at home. Theo was playing around with this new drone he had gotten; we were in our pyjamas. We started talking and we both thought, "Why don't we just do this now?"

Theo: I went upstairs and got the ring. Even though I knew the outcome was going to be positive, I was still nervous.

Audrey: Our wedding will be in the fall. I wasn't a girl who dreamed of her wedding day and the big poofy dress, but I'm actually having fun.
