Treat her like a queen with a stay at Ashford Castle on Lough Corrib. Dating to the 13th century, the former Guinness family estate is the kind of fortress you might have imagined as a child, complete with crenellated towers, imposing stone archways and glinting suits of armour. Valentine's Day and Switzerland are synonymous with chocolate, so what better place to enjoy a night of "sweet" romance than on Lake Geneva at the Beau-Rivage Palace. With its stunning neo-baroque architecture, frescoed lounges, elaborate mouldings and crystal chandeliers, the hotel certainly lives up to its name. Given its location in the heart of London's Mayfair, Dukes St. James – named "World's Leading Classic Boutique Hotel" at the World Travel Awards 2012 – is a surprisingly discreet hideaway, nestled in an ivy-draped courtyard near Green Park. Take advantage of the intimate atmosphere by booking one of three Valentine's packages, beginning at $695 (£443) a night. The "Forever in Love" offer includes 18 red roses, a private butler, dinner in your room, a bottle of champagne, rose petals scattered on the bed, Ren Rose bath oil and breakfast in bed; from $1,722 (£1,097) a night. With its gleaming white dome and graceful arches framing views of the Caribbean Sea, Cap Juluca shimmers like a Moorish mirage on the palm-fringed shores of Anguilla's southwest coast.
