Many people are intimidated by the thought of sporting over the top colours, but if you don’t embrace them now, then when? Winter lends itself so well to deeper, moodier shades, but now is the time to match sun-soaked days with sunshine-bright garments. Look for inspiration from New York designer Christian Siriano, who flaunted hyper-bright hues in his current collection and paired them with pinstripes for an unexpectedly bold effect.

To ease your fluoro-related fears, try seeking out separates in these colourful shades, instead of a dress or jumpsuit. Skirts, trousers, blouses and jackets require less commitment and more opportunity to style with items that can temper tropical tones. For example, Frame’s bright blue trousers have a sleek, narrow fit that would pair well with a beautiful white blouse and black accessories; add a scarf that picks up the same vibrant blue and you’re beautifully embracing the bright life.

I’d also suggest looking to pieces that have a classic silhouette; a timeless shape means it will have more longevity in your wardrobe and you can temper an acidic hue with other staples. J.Crew’s pencil skirt in neon yellow begs to be worn with a button-down shirt and simple jewellery – a pair of slim gold hoop earrings, perhaps. With colours this flashy, your accessories don’t need to take centre stage.

That said, if you’re going to go for it, go for it! Banana Republic’s sumptuous cashmere top has a juicy pink hue and sleeves so breezy, they practically scream summer. Sport this with lighter denim and slide sandals for long, lazy days spent in good company. Everyone will be happy you came baring – or, rather, wearing, sartorial cheer.
