If your spice drawer has been looking a little stale lately, you’re not alone. As a new mom, Kim Wiseman felt frustrated that she no longer had the time to cook flavourful meals, and the ready-made spice blends she found in the supermarket wielded disappointing results. “I’ve always loved experimenting with spices, blending up elaborate curries and grinding fresh ingredients together,” Wiseman says. “I was underwhelmed by blends I found on the grocery store shelves and couldn’t help but notice the lack of freshness and abundance of fillers in many spice blends.”
In 2018, Wiseman founded Kanel, a collection of all-natural salts and spice blends. Taking its name from the word for cinnamon in several Nordic languages, Kanel offers thoughtful, modern spice blends such as Stockholm Lemon & Dill, which can be used on grilled fish, potatoes and eggs, and Sweet & Smoky Salmon, a barbecue rub that balances caramelized brown sugar with mustard and bright citrus and a mellow heat. Their salts include Holy Grail Garlic Salt, a versatile sea salt that adds zesty flavour in a pinch, and Summer Black Truffle Salt for a luxurious, earthy element. “We really try to innovate and push our flavour combinations beyond the classics,” Wiseman says. Equally innovative is its packaging, recyclable cardboard tubes and resealable bags that are 100 per cent compostable. At Kanel’s first retail space in the Carrefour Laval shopping centre, flavour-starved shoppers can sniff and sample their way through Kanel’s spicy offerings, which also include giftable items such as a ceramic mortar and pestle made in Quebec’s Eastern Townships.

Fashion brand COS is taking part in this year’s edition of Milan Design Week. The London-based brand will present Conifera, a digitally fabricated architectural installation by award-winning French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani. The work bridges architecture and the natural world using structural form to transport the viewer from a courtyard and into its surrounding garden. It will be constructed of 3-D printed bio-plastic modules generated through an open-source software that uses an algorithm to ensure structural stability and optimize material use. A Canadian company is using fashion to raise awareness of mental health. One in Five Apparel is named after the statistic that one in five people will experience mental illness in any given year. The brand’s debut collection empowers the wearer to change the conversation on mental illness through simple, text-based designs on classic sweatshirts, baseball caps and pins.
